I wish I knew of a non-religious name for this craft, but this is what they’ve always been referred to as long as I’ve known how to do them. The project originates in Mexico and Bolivia and is known in Spanish as Ojo de Dios, which translates to God’s Eyes.
I simply just love the look of these wands and they make me happy. I use them as decorations around my gardens. These can be used as decoration anywhere or even ornaments for a Christmas tree during the holidays.
Looking for a relaxing, meditative craft that helps you use up your yarn stash? The wand God's eye (one-stick ojo de dios) is the perfect project! A Brief History
The traditional God's eye (Ojo de Dios) is a spiritual craft originating with the Huichol (pronounced WEE-chol) or (Wixárika) people of western Mexico. Created with two crossed sticks woven with colorful yarn, these sacred objects were made as prayers and offerings for protection, health, and fortune. The four points symbolize the elements: earth, fire, air, and water.
Parents traditionally crafted god's eyes when a child was born, adding a new woven section each year until the child reached five years old. Each color held meaning and the finished piece served as a spiritual eye watching over the child.
The wand God's Eye is a modern, simplified adaptation that honors the yarn-wrapping techniques and vibrant spirit of the original craft. While it doesn't carry the same ceremonial significance, it's a wonderful way to engage in mindful crafting and create something beautiful from your yarn scraps.

Free Pattern: One-Stick God's Eye
Step 1: Prepare Your Stick
Choose a stick that is slightly straight. If using a branch, make sure it's dry and remove any loose bark.
Step 2: Start Your Wrap
Tie your first yarn color to one end of the stick, leaving a 3-4 inch tail.
Step 3: Begin Wrapping
Hold the stick comfortably and begin wrapping the yarn tightly around it. Angle your wraps slightly as you go to create a spiral pattern that moves down the length of the stick. Keep your wraps close together and maintain even tension for a neat appearance.
Pro Tip: The tighter your wraps, the more secure your design. Loose wraps may slip and create gaps.
Step 4: Change Colors
When you're ready to switch to a new yarn color:
- Cut your current yarn, leaving a 3-4 inch tail
- Tie the new color to the old color with a small, tight knot
- Position the knot at the back or underside of your stick
- Trim tails short (about 1/4 inch)
- Continue wrapping following both sides of the previous color.
Step 5: Create Patterns
Experiment with different wrapping techniques to add visual interest:
- Solid blocks: Tight, close wraps for bold color sections
- Spaced wraps: Leave gaps between wraps to reveal the stick underneath
- Diagonal angles: Change the angle of your wraps for geometric effects
- Layered texture: Wrap back over previous sections to create dimension
- Mixed yarn weights: Combine chunky and fine yarns for contrast
Step 6: Finishing
When you reach the end of your stick (or your desired stopping point):
- Wrap a few extra tight rounds to secure
- Tie off with a firm knot
- Tuck the tail under previous wraps using your fingers or a crochet hook
- Trim excess yarn
- Optional: Add a tiny dab of clear craft glue to secure the end
Step 7: Embellishments (Optional)
Get creative with finishing touches:
- Add beads by threading them onto your yarn before wrapping
- Tie feathers to one or both ends
- Create tassels from your scrap yarn
- Wrap leather cord or ribbon for contrast
- Leave natural wood exposed at the ends
